Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategy director for communications is a difficult job. She has to deal with the president, who acts as his own communication director, multiple legal battles that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversies. Schlapp has kept her focus through the entire process, collaborating in close collaboration with White House policy and political teams as well as the legislative affairs team and shops. So far, her primary focus has been issues such as school safety and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade and other related topics. In her current job the director is not communicating with reporters. Her attention in March came when she was named one of the potential candidates to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is plagued by various concerns, which includes a president acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries involved in controversies of their own. Schlapp is able to remain in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game, working in conjunction with White House teams in political affairs, legislative affairs and policy, in addition to the wider communications team. The focus of her work has been on areas including the safety of schools, opioids, and infrastructure, as well as trade. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp does not have contact with many journalists. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of media attention when it became it was reported that she would be an option to take over Hope Hicks's job as director of communication.
